Rocco Romeo: Made for Greatness

It’s hard to miss someone standing at 6’5″, but when that height is paired with confidence and distinct personal style, they become impossible to miss. He commands attention both on and off the field, not because he learned how to, but because it’s in his DNA. With his roots deeply embedded in Southern Italy, Romeo embodies the passion and vibrancy of the Calabresi—a people known for their strength, loyalty, work ethic, and respect. These qualities shape every aspect of Romeo’s life, whether he’s leading his team on the pitch or engaging with the community.

From a young age, Romeo was rarely without a soccer ball at his feet, dreaming of playing for the world’s greatest clubs. His Italian heritage played a central role in fuelling his passion for the game. He grew up idolizing legendary Italian defender Paolo Maldini, whose grace and discipline greatly influenced Romeo’s approach to football, helping him carve out his own path to success.

Since joining Vancouver Football Club in its inaugural 2023 season, Romeo has grown alongside the club. Fans have witnessed his evolution as both a player and a leader. Reflecting on his time with VFC, Romeo acknowledges the challenges that came with joining a new project. “I knew it wasn’t going to be easy—there was always going to be some risk in joining a project like this—but I believed in it,” he states confidently.

As his two-year contract with Vancouver FC nears its end, Romeo looks back on his journey with the team and the community he now calls home. Having earned the titles of Supporters’ Player of the Season and Vancouver FC’s Player of the Year for 2023, the question remains: Can he maintain his reign both on and off the field? With his passion and dedication, it seems likely. “Every day is a blessing to play the beautiful game,” he says. “But wearing the eagle crest makes it even more meaningful.”

Romeo’s connection to his Italian roots runs deep, and food is a big part of that bond. For Italians, food symbolizes happiness and togetherness—values that reflect Romeo’s approach to life. Much like he is helping build Vancouver FC today, he is particularly grateful for the Italian immigrants who built Vancouver’s “Little Italy”, “It brings back a motherland type of feeling,” Romeo muses as he strolls through Vancouver’s “Little Italy,” savouring the flavours of Mediterranean cuisine. “It’s nice to be connected and surrounded by so many things that touch my heart.” He grins, adding, “Let’s not forget my mother’s Spaghetti alle Vongole—it’s the best. I made it once and absolutely nailed it.”

Little Italy is more than just a cultural landmark; it’s a testament to the hard work and perseverance of the Italian immigrants who made Vancouver their home. It’s also a place where the community’s passion for football thrives. Memorabilia from Italian clubs adorn the walls of local businesses, and on weekend mornings, Tifosi gather at Caffe Soccavo to watch Serie A matches. “Soccer is always involved in our culture and community,” Romeo remarks, emphasizing the enduring connection between football and his heritage.

Every summer, Vancouver’s Commercial Drive hosts “Italian Day,” drawing thousands to celebrate Italian culture. But the area truly comes alive when the Italian national team competes in major tournaments. Fans flood the streets, transforming Commercial Drive into a sea of celebration, and if the Azzurri win, the air fills with renditions of “Il Canto degli Italiani.”

Though sometimes perceived as aloof or arrogant, Romeo’s true nature shines brightest off the field. Those who know him understand his genuine care for others and his deep sense of purpose in all he does. After battling illness, injuries, and even a red card, Romeo ranks second in minutes played for Vancouver FC, with an impressive 3,944 minutes on the field. Yet, it’s his contributions to the community that truly set him apart. Whether he’s reading to kindergarten classes, coaching adaptive programs, cleaning up local streets, preparing meals for the Salvation Army, or brightening the days of children in the pediatric unit, Romeo is deeply committed to making a positive impact.

With a foundation built on heritage, hard work, and a passion for the game, Rocco Romeo is undoubtedly made for greatness—both as a player and as a leader in his community.
