Irving and Cameron earn Gameweek 25 TOTW

Vancouver FC is smack in the middle of the team’s playoff push, earning an incredibly important point against Cavalry FC on the road at ATCO Field. The point was pivotal because it kept VFC in sixth place, sitting only one point back from Pacific FC for the final playoff spot, while also ensuring Valour FC stays behind Vancouver for at least another week.

The result on Saturday was truly a team effort that featured young guns Grady McDonnell and James Cameron getting the start and going toe-to-toe with Cavalry’s top guys while veterans like Callum Irving showed clinical expertise in keeping the game at a deadlock. Because of that team effort, two VFC players have been named to the Canadian Premier League’s (CPL) Team of the Week (TOTW): Cameron and Irving.

Cameron made his sixth start in his last seven appearances on Saturday against Cavalry, continuing to be a consistent presence in Afshin Ghotbi’s squad. The 19-year-old defender registered team highs in interceptions (three), duels won (six) and touches (50) while also winning all three of his tackles.

Cameron was also named Performance of the Match for his efforts on Saturday which was the second time the North Vancouver native has earned the title, previously being named Performance of the Match in Matchweek 18 against B.C.-rivals Pacific FC. Today’s recognition is also Cameron’s second of the 2024 season and his fourth since joining Vancouver FC last year.

Irving was a force to be reckoned with in Vancouver’s net on Saturday, putting up four saves to stop all of Cavalry’s shots on target. The Calgary-side was relentless when it came to taking chances on the weekend, registering a total of 15 shots, all of which the 31-year-old goalkeeper had to stay on his toes for.

The 0-0 draw was Irving’s fourth clean sheet of 2024, including previously registering the same result against Cavalry in Kelowna for the inaugural CPL ‘On Tour’ series back in June. The native of Vancouver now holds nine clean sheets in his VFC career dating back to April 2023 and is one away from becoming the first goalkeeper in franchise history to register double-digit shutouts.

This is Irving’s third TOTW recognition in 2024, previously joining the League’s Best XI in Matchweek 5 and Matchweek 12 where the goalkeeper earned his first penalty save with the Eagles against Pacific which solidified the club’s fifth consecutive victory.

The Eagles are not done yet as they continue their playoff push for a berth in postseason action for the first time in franchise history. There are only three games left to go, with only one more being played at home at Willoughby Park.
