Meet VFC’s “Closer” Matteo Campagna

Since joining Vancouver FC late in their sophomore season, Matteo Campagna’s journey has been anything but easy. An early injury forced him into a tough battle for his spot in a defense stacked with seasoned veterans. For some fans, it raised questions like, Who is Matteo Campagna? and Does VFC still have a Number 5? But rather than being deterred, Matteo’s unyielding grit and determination have established him as a rising star, eager to prove his worth and make his mark on the Eagles’ backline. Every match becomes a new opportunity for him to solidify his place and showcase his talent to both teammates and supporters alike.

For Matteo, playing for Vancouver FC is more than just wearing the jersey—it’s a homecoming. It’s a chance to compete in front of the people who watched his dream take shape in the very same place he grew up. Known off the field for his calm demeanour and sharp soccer intellect, Matteo’s ability to read the game and remain composed under pressure sets him apart. At just 20 years old, his story is still unfolding, but his perseverance and passion are already inspiring a new generation of young Canadian athletes.

“I love where I’m from. I’ve lived in the same house all my life. This was the way to my heart, this is what got me, this is what I wanted,” Matteo says, reflecting on the deep connection he feels to his home and why he signed for Vancouver FC.

Traveling to away games, sitting on the bench, and being left off the roster can crush the spirits of many athletes, but for Matteo, these challenges only lit a fire. What could have been moments of defeat became fuel for his ambition. He used the frustration as motivation, pushing harder in the gym, arriving earlier to the facility, and giving everything he had on the field. This relentless drive helped him overcome setbacks, turning obstacles into stepping stones toward growth.

Matteo’s grounded approach, supported by his brothers and family, played a vital role in keeping him focused. As he navigated these challenges, his habits shifted—he shut out distractions and rededicated himself to improving every aspect of his game.

“Initially when I came, I set out to be a starter. I want to develop here, get the minutes, and play. I want to play for my national team,” Matteo declares, his ambition clear.

His versatility is one of his greatest strengths—whether it’s at full-back, center-back, or holding midfield, Matteo’s ability to adapt across positions allows him to read the game with a unique insight. He plays with a maturity and composure that belies his age, making it hard to believe he’s only 20. Despite his youth, Matteo has already stepped into a mentoring role for the younger players, all while absorbing valuable lessons from the experienced veterans in the Eagles’ locker room. This balance of learning and leadership showcases his maturity beyond his years and his commitment to growing as a player.

“They started calling me ‘The Closer’ because when I stepped on the field, I’d try to finish the game with a goal or an assist to secure the win,” he says with a smile. “The name stuck, but I’m aiming to change that to ‘The Starter.’ For now, though, ‘The Closer’ works just fine!”

With a combination of humility and hunger, Matteo Campagna is quickly becoming a fan favorite and a player to watch—not just for Vancouver FC, but for Canadian soccer as a whole.
