Vancouver FC sign Vasco Fry on loan from Whitecaps

Vancouver FC have added another midfielder to their squad in the midseason transfer window with the announcement of Vasco Fry joining the Canadian Premier League (CPL) team on loan from Vancouver Whitecaps FC 2 (WFC2).

“I’m looking forward to this new adventure with Vancouver FC and CPL,” said Fry.

The 23-year-old has spent the first part of 2023 with WFC2 of the MLS Next Pro League making 14 starts in 17 appearances. He also spent the 2023 MLS preseason playing for the Whitecaps first team where he made four appearances.

In March of this year, Fry signed two MLS short-term agreements with the Whitecaps first team which earned him a spot on the roster for the March 25th match against Minnesota United FC. He was also rostered for the Whitecaps’ Concacaf Champions Cup game on March 15th against Real España where he made his first team debut as a substitute in the 76th minute.

“We are thrilled to bring Vasco Fry to Vancouver FC,” said VFC head coach, Afshin Ghotbi. “He brings a wealth of talent, unique experience, and depth to our squad.”

Fry is a product of the Whitecaps academy, first joining the youth program in 2018 from Peru’s Club Sporting Cristal’s academy when his family moved to Burnaby, BC. The following year, Fry committed to the ‘Caps Development Squad and represented the team until 2021.

During those two years, Fry was occasionally called up to the U23 Whitecaps team and received playing time with the older group. The midfielder made the leap to WFC2 in 2022 where he made 23 appearances, scored one goal and registered three assists.

“I’ve had a positive soccer experience in Vancouver so far in my career and I can’t wait to continue it with this new squad,” said Fry. “Having the chance to play more consistent minutes in a Canadian professional league is very exciting.”

Fry is a native of Peru and brings international youth experience to VFC. He has made two caps for the Peruvian U17 national team including a substitute appearance at the 2017 U17 South American Championships.

Vancouver FC also announced that the Club has reached agreements with Eugene “Pele” Martínez and Kahlil John-Wentworth to mutually terminate their contracts. Martínez played in 12 matches for VFC, including the lone Canadian Championship game, while John-Wentworth had yet to play for the team.

Fry’s contract will see him with Vancouver FC until the end of the 2023 CPL season. The 23-year-old could make his VFC debut when the team plays their next home match on Sunday, August 6th. Tickets to the Women & Girls in Sport match on Sunday are still available and can be purchased here.
