Vasco Fry earns third TOTW recognition after VFC season finale

Vancouver FC put up an undeniable fight. Throughout the entirety of the 2024 season, the Eagles were able to weather the highs and the lows to compete consistently against the top teams in the Canadian Premier League (CPL). Vancouver demonstrated growth in just the club’s second year including holding on to hopes of making the CPL playoffs for the first time in franchise history until the absolute end.

Although Vancouver was able to secure a draw to remain undefeated in the club’s final four matches of the 2024 season, the point was not enough to jump the standings and make the final playoff spot. However, the team performance and commitment to each other to put everything on the line and do whatever it took was evident in the club’s finale as the full team worked tirelessly to keep a dominant Atlético Ottawa team off the board. Although we believe that everyone on VFC should have been named to the CPL’s Team of the Week (TOTW), one player did earn the League recognition for the final matchweek of 2024: Vasco Fry.

Fry, 24, was a pivotal player in the midfield for the Eagles all season but put on a master class in VFC’s finale. He worked with his teammates to maintain control when the Eagles had possession and did everything he could to get the ball back when Ottawa was in control. Fry led the team in all ball control categories including touches with 76, total passes with 53, and accurate passes with 39.

Defensively, Fry went to battle against the Atléti and came out victorious the majority of the time. He won seven out of this 10 duels, he won three of his five tackles, and held the team high for winning possession 14 times. On the other end of the field, Fry was not afraid to show some offensive prowess including registering two shots and creating two chances. Fry also registered the team high of nine final third entries, helping to provide VFC with dangerous scoring opportunities.

For his efforts, Fry earned Performance of the Match on Saturday for the second time in the 2024 season after previously earning the recognition in Matchweek 6 when he scored VFC’s first Olympico to secure a 2-1 victory over Forge FC at Tim Hortons Field. Today’s TOTW nod is Fry’s third of the season with the first two happening in Matchweek 7 when the 24-year-old midfielder scored in game-winning goals in back-to-back matches.
