Vote for the Eagles in the 2023 CPL Fan Awards

Voting is now open for the 2023 Canadian Premier League (CPL) Fan Awards which features eight voting categories and Team of the Year nominees. Vancouver FC has four player nominations over three categories including Callum Irving for Save of the Year, TJ Tahid and James Cameron for U-21 Inspirational Moment, and Rocco Romeo for Best Dressed. VFC’s Gabriel Bitar is also nominated amongst midfielders for Team of the Year.

Fans can submit their votes online daily until 9 p.m. PT on Tuesday, December 5th with each voting submission becoming a chance to win one of three CPL prize packs.

Irving is up against Forge FC’s Triston Henry and Atlético Ottawa’s Nathan Ingham for Save of the Year. The highlight reel stop that earned Irving a nomination is from Vancouver’s 2-0 home victory over Forge on June 20th, which was the Eagle’s historic first win at Willoughby Park. The 30-year-old keeper made a flying save off a dangerous free kick, reaching into the very top corner to tip the ball and blocking the rebound which eventually earned Irving his third clean sheet of the season.

As far as young talent goes, Vancouver has made a point of developing some of the greatest including TJ Tahid and James Cameron, who are up against each other and Valour FC’s Matteo de Brienne for U-21 Inspirational Moment. Tahid became the youngest player to sign and play in the CPL this season and completed his triple threat on June 2nd when he scored his first professional goal. The 16-year-old showed confidence beyond his years as he dribbled into Pacific FC’s box and found space in front of three defenders to release a precision strike. The goal was the first of three that Tahid scored in his inaugural season including the game-winners on June 20th and September 20th.

Cameron also had a breakout season in 2023, joining Vancouver on a developmental contract before signing a standard player contract. The 18-year-old’s moment to remember came in Vancouver’s 2-1 victory over Ottawa when he tapped in a rebound to score the game-winning goal in injury time. What was almost more memorable than the goal itself was Cameron’s “Titanic” celebration which fans connected to the director who shares his name.

Romeo has already earned the title of Best Dressed from the Eagles but now the defender is up against Béni Badibanga of Forge and Doneil Henry of Halifax Wanderers FC for the CPL’s Best Dressed. Romeo has donned many memorable game day fits in 2023 but one of his most iconic looks happened at Vancouver’s Firefighter Appreciation Night. The 23-year-old arrived at the facility in authentic Township of Langley Firefighter regalia to show his support for the first responders. Iconic if you ask us!

The last category that fans can vote on are the players for the Team of the Year, which includes VFC’s Bitar among the midfielders. Bitar found his stride the second half of 2023 including providing goal contributions in six of his final eight games of the season. The 25-year-old led Vancouver in assists with four and co-led in goals with six, which also set a new career record for Bitar.

There are only seven days for fans to get their votes in. Head to the CPL website or follow this link to cast them today and make sure to do it all again tomorrow.
